Pai Gow  Rules / Strategy

Pai Gow poker is always a favorite. Pai Gow it played with 52 cards and a joker that can be played as an ace or to fill a straight or a flush – there is lots of room for dynamism. Just to add a bit more excitement to this game, you are playing two hands and both those hands will need to beat the house for you to win.

Each player is dealt seven cards. The players then use these cards to make two hands: one five card high-hand and another two card low-hand. One of the most challenging elements of this game is splitting your seven cards into the two hands. The better you split your seven cards, the better your chance at beating the house and taking the pot.

The hands in Pai Gow are the same as regular poker. So, if you know poker, you know Pai Gow – except you will be playing with two hands. A couple of points to keep in mind…

  • Your high-hand must be higher than your low hand

  • In the case of a tie – the house always wins

When you are playing Pai Gow poker the player is provided with spaces to bet: low hand, high hand, and sometimes the house commission. The first thing to happen is the dealer deals seven seven-card hands. Now, the banker does have the option to play as a player or play for the house. However, more often that not, the dealer will play for the house.

The next step is the dealer shakes a dice cup containing three dice. This is choose which hand will go to which player. The dice are nothing more than a formality. It will not matter. Dice are pure chance. The only thing you need to concern yourself with is the hand that you are given. Don't get all caught up in the distraction of the dice and the cup.

Each player divides their two hands with the low hand, two-card hand going in the box nearest the dealer. The high five-card hand stays face down and nearest the player. The dealer then goes around the table counter-clockwise taking, paying, or knocking each player's hand.

There primary strategy in Pai Gow and is how to make your hands and how to place your bets. These two things are the foundation of playing Pai Gow. The simple-starter strategy is to make the highest two card hand you can manage without stepping on your five-card high hand. The hardest decision is know when to split your low-card hand if you have a pair - since, generally, pairs win the two-card low hand. Keep your cards tight, play your best game of Pai Gow and good luck.
